Minibeast Wildlife - Ethical Captive Breeder

An overwhelming favourite, the Spiny Leaf Insect is a hardy pet, easy to keep and a fascinating addition to your home or school.

As far as insect pets go, Spiny leaf insects are a winner! They have amazing camouflage, and are able to be handled gently. These captive-bred insects mainly feed on eucalyptus leaves, and can be kept in groups or on their own. As adults, the females have short, flightless wings, and the adult males have long wings and are capable of flying short distances. Females are also able to reproduce without a male!

    Class Pet

Posted by Deborah Diedricks on 28th Oct 2024

We did order a male which we believe should have wings. We already had two females. I am not sure the one you sent is a male. I cant see any wings and it looks very similar to the females we already have, which is a bit disappointing. Am I missing something? He/she arrived in good health and my students quickly assimilated her/him into her/his new environment. Minibeast Wildlife reply: Hi Deborah, we sell the insects as juveniles, so your male will develop wings as he grows. You will see that your juvenile male has a smooth back, whereas the juvenile females have a spiky back.
